Only use a regular ink ballpoint pen for writing on the wood.  Do not use any type of marker, or pen with "fluid/gel" ink.  If in doubt regarding what type of pen to use, simply write a few letters or draw a small line on the back.  If the ink does not spread out across the wood grain after a minute, then it will be good to write with.
